CD Reviews

Fine, fine playing!!

"Like 700 million other people, this is one of the albums which turned me on to playing the guitar and I haven't stopped since. This is where the Ventures truly hit their stride, the re-furbished version of their original early '60s hit propelled by Don Wilson's pipeline inspired muted guitar accompaniment. it is also where they began using Semie Mosley's "Ventures" guitar model, giving them that distinctive "Ventures" sound. I recently purchased a DVD of one of their recent performances. It happily confirmed to me that Nokie Edwards was and remains one of the great players of country/rock and roll and pop guitar. This album has a great selection of tunes, from the refurbished Walk Don't Run to Diamond head, Pedal Pusher and a raunchy House of the Rising Sun. One additional point: check out the look on Mel Taylor's (brother of Larry Taylor)face - priceless!! Anyone who hasn't been into the Ventures before, buy this album!! It is a classic and truly is one which would accompany me on a desert island, right next to the Beatles' Revolver, Clapton's D&D, and Hendrix's Electric Ladyland. Classic stuff!!"

"This is a great album. Especially the Creeper, House of the Rising Sun, and Walk Don't Run '64."
