Smooth as a Sunday Morning

"I reached under my pillow and there it was... this slim box, gift wrapped with love. Irresistable. The gift giver was a Monk fan who knows good music, especially jazz, so when I unwrapped "The Art of the Ballad" I knew it would be good. It was a Sunday morning, and I put the CD on to play while sipping my first cup of coffee. Mmmm. Right time of day, right type of music, right setting of a Sunday mood. Monk, I've learned, is always a surprise. His music changes with his moods, and his moods are many and varied... and always colorful. His name belongs at the top when the topic is bebop, blues, jazz, or very simply - the musically unique. I've heard Monk described as wild, as angular, working over broken rhythms until the listener's ear is jolted into life. This collection of ballads, however, is smooth from beginning to end. Monk works his magic on the piano in each ballad, sometimes unaccompanied - as in "I Surrender, Dear" and in "'Round Midnight" - but on other ballads, Coltrane joins him on sax ("Crepuscule with Nellie", Monk's romantic tribute to his wife), or a background of bass, drums, or unobtrusive brass, completes the mood. I've become relatively well acquainted with Monk's music by now... but this collection of ballads is easily my fast favorite. It may just become a Sunday morning tradition."

"i love monk!!!i love this CD!!! Monk & Ballads...what a concept. i've been listening to mr monk since hi school...way over 50 years. hung out at the 5 spot...monk/griffin/trane/rollins & rouse. you can hear me applauding on the Town Hall recording. Monk & Ballads...its about time."
