"stars for the music, one for the packaging, as cds are housed in potentially-damaging cardboard sleeves and, somewhat annoyingly, no liner notes accompany the product (yeah, I know, that should allow for a three stars rating, but hey, I'm giving a four). still, you can't go wrong with the music, which is 9 cds of Monk's earliest, now public domain, recordings, with Milt Jackson, Miles and Sonny Rollins, among others, all amply featured. needless to say, perhaps, herein are located some of the earliest takes of such Monk classics as Well, You Needn't; Monk's Mood, Epistropy, Evidence, Hackensack, etc. the sound, which is mono, is actually quite passable throughout. 35-50 minutes of music per disc (so it certainly could have been fit onto less discs than was done, but why question the reasoning), with the tenth cd in the set featuring interpretations of some of Monk's best-known tunes by folks other than the man himself. worth tracking down in a bricks and mortar record store, where there's a good chance that it can be had for around $15.99 new..."
