A posthumous live double album, Thin White Rope's The One That Got Away is too good to fall between the cracks. Over the course of the '80s, this unjustly overlooked Southern California quartet turned out five albums of twisted lyrical imagery and fiery guitar interplay. This album chronicles their last show ever in Ghent, Belgium, in June '92. The sound quality is surprisingly good, and a generous set list covers the band's own psychedelic standards ("Disney Girl," "Down in the Desert") as well as such appropriate covers as Can's monolithic anthem, "Yoo Doo Right." -- Jim DeRogatis

The greates live album ever recorded

"If you love screaming guitars, fire, cowboys, the desert, terrifying lyrics, live music and have a taste for tunes from the entire 20th century, you cannot go wrong with this one.OK, so that is a pretty diverse collection of intersts, but so is Thin White Rope. They cover tunes from Roky Erikson, swing, pop, and classic punk, while creating their own songs that belong among the best of the 20th Century.Unfortunately, this album was the band's Swan Song, a final concert before they disapeared into new bands (Acme Rocket Quartet, Mummy Dogs, etc.) and soil science. The music -- unlike most -- has held up through the years and continues to rock and interest today.I kid you not, you cannot go wrong with this one."

The greatest live album ever?

"I usually steer well clear of live albums. After all, why would I want to shell out my hard earned cash for muddy sub-standard mixes of songs I already own? The background cheering of the crowd? Hardly.But this.... this is different. The One That Got Away is quite possibly the greatest live rock album ever. Already great songs are held up on massive walls of squalling feedback as Thin White Rope - the most criminally neglected rock band of the 80s and early 90s - go out with a bang. This is the only CD I own that someone's asked me to stop playing because she was _frightened_ by it; not because she thought it was bad, but because she thought it was genuinely terrifying. And at times it is, but it's also occasionally deeply, surreally funny ('Elsie Crashed the Party', anyone?).The amazing thing about The One That Got Away is that, almost without exception, the live versions of the songs are _better_ than the studio originals. I'm thinking particularly of 'Take it Home' and 'Triangle', which were already breathtaking slices of American psychosis even before they were given the live once over. And then there's the covers... If anyone knows of a more stunning version of Roadrunner, I'd like to hear it. Only the cover of Silver Machine lets them down ever so slightly.Personally, I couldn't do without this album. Why don't you own it?"

"If you don't know Thin White Rope, this is a great sample of what they are all about. Whether you will love or merely like them will depend on your reaction to the singer's voice (just like some people are bugged by Bob Dylan's voice or Neil Young's or Tom Waits's). An ex-girlfriend told me that she loved the songs, but hated his voice.The TROUSER PRESS GUIDE once said that if THE TWILIGHT ZONE had a house band, TWR would be it. And this is really strange music, but anyone who loves bands like Yo La Tenga, Eleventh Dream Day, the Wipers, Television, and Galaxie 500 will definitely go for this stuff."
