This is one great album, lyrically clever, musically diverse, and very dance-able as an added bonus-this album brings the funk! Edmond | New York State | 08/02/2007 (4 out of 5 stars) "Even though every one else raves about "The Key To Her Ferrari", it's my least favorite song on this. I saw Thomas Dolby live at a small club in Washington DC (the 930 Club) when this CD was out. It was great - just like this CD. "Budapest By Blimp" IS very good, like everyone says-it's unlike anything you've ever heard. It's kind of like floating on a blimp yourself. I also Love "The Ability To Swing" which sounds like an old fashioned nightclub jazz tune. "May the Cube Be With You" was not on the album I bought back in '88, and I was pretty upset. It's a very funky and danceable song. "My Brain Is Like a Sieve" and "Pop Culture" have a reggae tinge. "Hot Sauce" is a lot of fun, with slightly dirty lyrics, as is "Airhead". I have always enjoyed this CD, and you will too." Revisiting a classic R. Legendre | New Orleans, LA | 04/15/2008 (4 out of 5 stars) "I had been a voracious collector of Thomas Dolby's music since 1985 with the release of "The Flat Earth". Well, 3 years went buy without so much as a whimper from Dolby until a friend of mine called me during the spring of 1988 to tell me that a new album had just been released. I was at the record store within minutes.
The spring of 1988 was a very bittersweet time for me. I was just about to graduate high school, I just got my first car, and I had just experienced my first serious heartbreak. Two things got me through this time in my life; my friends and this album. "Budapest By Blimp" seemed to echo the bittersweet mentality that I was experiencing at the time and I have recently dug the CD up out of my collection and have been listening to it for the past few days. Here I am 20 years later and I find that "Budapest" still touches me deep inside. Despite the fact that "AAMB" is forever trapped in the '80s, the music and lyrics are still deep and meaningful and have withstood the test of time. Dolby has always been an underappreciated musician and lyricist, but this album, more than any other (IMHO), is the best example of his artistic brilliance. Most people remember him because of "She Blinded Me With Science", but by the time "AAMB" was released, it was evident that he had grown and matured as a songwriter and was capable of much more meaningful work than a simple '80s pop tune. Highly recommneded for Dolby fans and for music fans in general." |
