Modern big-name Bach at its best

"Although world renowned today in a wide range of music, Thomas Quasthoff had a slow rise to stardom and psent many early years as a Bach spe;cialist. DG has been slow to include that part of his repertoire, but now we have two CDs of cantatas, this new one being for two singers. There are only two actual duets, in Cantatas 152 and 49, but the two soloists trade arias and sometimes join in recitative. Compared to the first CD of solo cantatas from Quasthoff, this material is much less well known but equally inspired. Roschmann is expert and lovely, a good match for Quasthoff, but clearly its his show, and without a doubt he is a great artist. My only slight reservation is that the voice isn't as full and easy as it was five years ago, but that's insignificant when it comes to a unqiuely communicative artist."
Disappointing!

"These comments apply only to Cantata 49 on this disk (I haven't listened to #'s 57 and 152 often enough), but Dorothea Röschmann has far too much vibrato for Bach! She and Quasthoff are not a good combiation. The tempo in the (usually) glorious final movement of this performance is too fast -out of keeping with the pace of the rest of the Cantata."

"This is a wonderfully fresh sounding collection of Bach cantatas that will charm and delight - impressively conceived, artistically arranged, and beautifully sung by Thomas Quasthoff and Dorothea Röschmann. You will definitely keep this disc at the top of your collection."
Matching expectation

"As a lover of Bach cantata, I am appreciated in this album and expect to listen the cooperation of Thomas Quasthoff and Dorothea Röschmann. In most of bach cantatas, it's important to balance the performance between conductor, orchestra and singers. It's clear that this album of dialogue cantatas, offer a good chance to Quasthoff, show expressive skills and warm voices, even Quasthoff isn't famous of bach music.
However, these 3 cantatas they are worth listenning again and again, and I believe you will get more, enjoy a different style of bach.
