CD ReviewsIf you like Dream Theater you'll like Threshold Justin Gaines | 10/26/1999 (4 out of 5 stars) "In between rock and heavy, they sound very similar to Dream Theater.Good vocals and great musicians." The true Threshold sound emerges Justin Gaines | Northern Virginia | 03/08/2008 (4 out of 5 stars) "Threshold's 1999 album Clone is where the Threshold sound most people are used to really started to coalesce.
Threshold has had a progressive metal sound from the very beginning, but with Clone that sound became decidedly more keyboard-oriented. Richard West is one of the best in the business, and his talents, especially in terms of songwriting, did a lot to push the band in a direction that we all know and love. The album also benefits from some new blood on vocals. This is where Andrew "Mac" McDermott joined the band. His unique vocal style, combined with West's songwriting, redefined the Threshold sound, especially on later albums Hypothetical and Critical Mass. The album does tend to get a bit repetitive, and the production job is somewhat lacking, but overall Clone is still an impressive progressive metal album, and is just a hint of the great things to come from Threshold. It's not quite on par with the albums that followed it, but Clone is still an important part of the Threshold legacy, and one that any fan of the band should own. " |
