Utterly Underrated

"Perhaps the least popular of Tiffany's albums, NEW INSIDE has obviously received the least acclaim of all the CDs this former teen idol has ever made. Even so, I see nothing wrong with it at all. True, I loved her previous work with her 1987 debut album--which I'll forever remember to be her BEST work--and her 1988 release HOLD AN OLD FRIEND'S HAND, but this CD still holds its own despite her digression from the 1980s California rock that made her a household name to early-1990s dance.



To begin with, NEW INSIDE combines a decent balance of high-energy dance songs with smooth, heart-warming love ballads, which Tiffany has proven to sing with intensity and conviction back in the late-80s. Likewise, despite what some other Tiffany fans (not to mention some jaded music critics) might otherwise suggest, our favorite redhead does sound more mature and sophisticated on this album than before, thanks in part to the music that accompanies her always-melodious voice. One particular song that proves both points is Diane Warren's "Here In My Heart," which I had heard before as performed by the Scorpions and the Berliner Philharmoniker on their 2000 release, MOMENT OF GLORY; indeed, Klaus Meine and Lyn Liechty performed that song well as a duet, but our girl Tiffany could easily compare with her 1990 recording. Of course, the other songs on this album can easily be classified as "ear candy" in their own right, especially the title track and the ballad "Tenderly." Very good stuff!



In short, NEW INSIDE may not have earned Tiffany a well-deserved Grammy, but it still deserves to be remembered in a positive light as an effort on behalf of her continuing efforts to define herself as one of the music industry's most talented, versatile, and--if you'll pardon the bad pun--"noteworthy" players. Way to sing it, Tiff!"

Tiffany tackles soul with mixed results

"New Inside came at a time when the Full Force, C&C Music Factory, and Soul II Soul were on the rise, and Tiffany's third album reflected those changes, as most of the songs here sport a new soul/funk sound, such as the title track, where the music's more like early Janet Jackson than the mall pop from her first two albums."It's You" sounds like she's trying to do the Samantha Fox/Full Force thing from two years back, except with keyboards that fit more on a Cover Girls album. Both this track and the previous one clock in over five minutes when four minutes would've been perfect.After a brief symphonic instrumental interlude "A Moment To Rest", we get the ballad "Tenderly", which sports pouring water special effects and keyboards akin to the Human League's "Human", which is more like the Tiffany that's known. The R&B backup singers from the other two songs are still there.A burst of racing synths begins "Never Run My Motor Down" which is an uptempo funk disco song. Some fiery electric guitar enters the mix of this floor burner. A standout cut here. And I was interested to notice one of the co-writers--Andre Cymone, Prince's childhood friend who quit after the Dirty Mind album.The opposite spectrum is reached with the sad tugging strings "Here In My Heart" written by Diane Warren-no wonder why it's so good."Tiff's Back" complete with rap by the redhead herself, is in the mold of the funky soul Fox/Full Force genre and seems to be a song about why she took two years to get to album #3. A strong song to come back with, although something like this, chartworthy to be in the Top Ten along with Expose, Janet Jackson, or Whitney Houston, probably got buried in the lower half of the charts, if this was a single. "Our Love" and "Life Affair" have the same kind of sound, with the former a bit overlong at just over six minutes."Back In The Groove" sounds like a classic 70's disco ballad complete with synths and backing singers and I checked the song credits to make sure. Nope, Tiffany co-wrote it. Another standout cut. "just when I thouhgt I'd lose my baby" is reminsicent of Wham's "can't you see I'm falling apart" from "Blue."The seven minutes plus "There's No Other" is a typical late 80's/early 90's R&B ballad with backup singers, with a style like Paula Abdul's "Blowing Kisses In The Wind" or Jody Watley's "Everything."Tiffany's vocals aren't as developed to handle the majority of this stuff, but she scores on "Back in The Groove" and "Here In My Heart" and the two shaking numbers "Never Run My Motor Down" and "Tiff's Back." A bold adventurous third effort, but it's clear to see why it fails. If she didn't try to mix Foxy's mixture with the Cover Girls..."
