Beautiful America is the soundtrack for a PBS broadcast of the same name, and the result is a series of compressed, sometimes hurried orchestrations from composer Tim Janis that often sound more like a collection of cues r... more »ather than a fully realized body of work. Clocking in at a little over 41 minutes, just three of the disc's 14 tracks exceed three minutes, leaving Janis minimal time to develop the sweeping spectacles of heart-rending grandeur that he favors. Janis has the skill to create emotionally stirring music that articulates life's climatic, wide-screen joys and triumphs (highlights: "Bright Angel Canyon," "Golden Sunrise," "Ocean Rose"). Yet sometimes Janis too often (and here, too abruptly) relies on the same bag of tricks (swelling strings, yearning pennywhistle, crowning cymbal crashes) in search of a grand cinematic resolution for nearly every piece. It's apparent Janis is enamored by the beauty of the world around him, so it's hard to fault him for reaching for the brass ring in almost every composition. But subtlety has its merits, too. --Terry Wood« less

"One word... ***AWESOME***!I first heard of the Tim Janis Ensemble on a PBS special about the United States National Parks, featuring music from this CD. Immediately I was hooked as a Tim Janis fan, and absolutely had to purchase the CD! This is some of the most awesome, beautiful, moving, and emotional music that you've ever heard, ranking with the likes of other famous composers such as John Williams and James Horner IMHO :)"
A Relaxing and Enjoyable Collection

"At this point I believe I have all of Tim Janis' CDs, and quite frankly, many of them sound the same. Perhaps this is due to the fact that natural images often stimulate his creativity and he uses subjects of the Northeast as his inspiration. This is not always a bad thing since his music is soothing and easily evokes the landscapes and images that inspire his compositions. My first thought is that BEAUTIFUL AMERICA would be more of the same, but it is not. Janis uses a broad spectrum of natural images and sets them to music and the sound is rather satisfying. The recording is actually the soundtrack to a PBS special of the same name. Most of the tracks are relatively short, but each conveys a distinct image.Janis fans will not be disappointed and people new to his music will find this recording to be rather enjoyable. Like Janis' other music, this collection is best suited for background music after a long day or on a stressful ride. I know I have personally found Janis' music a welcome companion when I have been stuck in Boston's often nightmarish traffic."

"I really love the music of Tim Janis. I have two of his earlier CDs and Beautiful America is a great new album. I love listening to it while I'm at work and to relax when I get home. He writes his music with so much love and I would recommend getting this CD if you like your music to be melodic and uplifting."

"I came across Beautiful America on PBS and I just loved the music. This music is composed from the heart and really makes you relax. The music has these gigantic sweeping melodies that mesmerizes the listener and makes them forget about their worries. I have a 7 month old baby who has trouble sleeping and last night I put on this CD and rocked her and it worked like a charm. I highly recommend this CD to people who just want to listen to music that touches their soul and inspires them."
