"This album from 1957 features Tina Louise singing pop standards. Tina has a decent voice, but her singing is really nothing special. The songs have tasteful arrangements, but they aren't too exciting. In short, this is an average "album by a starlet" of the era. It will mostly be of interest to fans of Gilligan's Island."
A Real Desert Island Disk (*pun intended...) ! ! !

"O.K. The truth is that this album isn't so great... (not bad either, but by no means great) *except* for the fact that its GINGER from Gilligan's Island and she's playing with Coleman Hawkins... that alone makes it a fun piece of trivia to pull out the next time people are visiting your house and the conversation hits a lull. Whatever you do though, don't let the cover art fool you - - Its not some groovy 1960s hip and swinging or loungy Claudette Longine or Ann Margaret type thing... It was actually recorded in 1957, but sounds more like 1940's type "serenade" music... candle light dinner/relaxing on a Sunday afternoon thing. There's nothing wrong with this and she does it QUITE well - - but throughout the album there is pretty much a lack of variety of tempos and rhythms... its all moonstruck lover's type music, so as a result, even though she's actually quite good, after a while its like overdosing on warm milk and Valium... (In all fairness, this was in an era when mainstream white jazz singers weren't under too much of an imperative to swing or belt it out anyway.)
On the other hand - - Coleman Hawkins does get some nice breaths in... though you have to wait quite a long time for them. (Hint - - skip ahead to Embracable You.) Other featured soloists include Hilton Jefferson and Tyree Glenn.
My advice though... if you have any friends who are NICK AT NIGHT/TV LAND NERDS and what to impress them when they come over, put it on the player, give them a bunch of vague hints and play the "See if you can guess who this is..." game."
