Don't Sleep! The Girl Can Sang (with an "a")!

"Apparently, there's some sort of unwritten cosmic law which dictates that while musical entertainers are free to cross over into the realm of acting at will, celebrities who first enter the public eye on the stage or screen are not to be taken seriously as singers or musicians, regardless of their talent in these areas. The sole exception to this seems to be Jamie Foxx, and even that wasn't true until after "Ray".



Way back in 1994, I was one of two people at my school who bought Jamie Foxx's thoroughly enjoyable album "Peep This", and both of us had a hard time convincing anyone that the disc was worth a listen. "That cat from Living Color? Pffhhh!" was the standard reply.



Unfortunately, Tisha Campbell's 1993 album would be painted with the same brush. No one would give it a chance. I first noticed Campbell's stellar voice in "Little Shop of Horrors" and on the TV show "Rags to Riches", not to mention the times she rocked the mic on "Martin", so I was excited when this album dropped in 1993. I had high expectations for the disc, and it didn't disappoint. Campbell has a phenomenally powerful, goose-bump inducing voice, tremendous (whistle register) range, and clear, crisp phrasing to rival that of Nat "King" Cole. This was a particular treat for the discriminating listener in an era of mumble-mouthed R&B.



In all honesty, there's not a track you want to skip through on this album. It has everything from fun, fast-paced party cuts like "Push", "Wrap Your Love", and "Love Me Down" to slow, sensual jams like "All Good Things (Come in Time)", "Brokenhearted", and the exquisitely heartfelt "Why Won't You Love Me?". The production is on point and Tisha's skills as a vocalist and a song-writer never fail to impress. If you like R&B (especially 90s R&B/New Jack Swing) you'll love this disc. In fact, if you're anything like me, you'll find yourself fiendin' for more and end up running down Tisha's work on the soundtracks of "Sprung", "School Daze", and "Little Shop of Horrors", and the "Divas Simply Singing" disc, out of sheer desperation!



Talent is talent. Don't sleep on this album just because you think of Tisha as an actress. The girl can sang, with an "a"!"

From Rags To Beautiful Songs

"Tisha Campbell is a underrated actress with a big beautiful singing voice. While America gives these bitches like Ashanti, Britney, Hilary and Lindsay the limelight and pass on Tisha! Not right yall! Every song on this album is slamming. Capitol should have done a better job promoting this wonderful album. "Push" is a funky track which enlisted the help of Tichina Arnold on backgrounds. "All Good Things Come In Time" is a quiet storm classic song. "Brokenhearted" is a slice of perfect pitch heaven. "Love's Got A Hold On Me" is a sexy slow number that captivates any ole heart. So in parting, the next time somebody complains about not any real singers, cop this album.



How does America think that Britney, Ashanti, Hillary and Lindsay have vocal talents? I have Britney & Ashanti. These girls need to go to vocal camp and learn a thing or two from Ms. Campbell Martin. These girls couldn't hold a candle next to Tisha's four octaves. Think about that, the next time yall complain about no talent girls!"
