"Five Big Stars!! The fabulous, award-winning jazz/soul European duo "tok tok tok" has done it again with this terrific CD. Following the award-winning CDs "About" and "It Took So Long", this CD-single contains 3 songs from their upcoming full CD "From Soul to Soul" (which I own and it's wonderful music).
Stunning singer/lyricist Tokunbo Akinro proves once again that she is up in the front rank of jazz & soul singers and song writers, producing some great vocals & heartfelt poetry. Possessing a voice that can go from low & sensual to high & hip, and from soft to stinging, if you haven't heard Tokunbo, "you're late"!! Creative multi-instrumentalist Morten Klein is a one-man elemental musical force who creates musical grooves and solos that are bluesy and invigorating, with a nod to Ben Webster when he plays tenor sax. Together they produce mesmerizing original music on this CD, dedicated to their American soul heroes and heroines, but delivered in their wonderful "tok tok tok" way. The long-running duo, which had expanded to a quartet, is outfitted this time with a hot drummer bringing the group to 'quintet' status.
The 'Piece De Resistance' is "Toxido Junction", a strong, bluesy groove swinger that is dedicated to soul-meister James Brown and it BURNS all the way with Tokunbo and Morten doing what they do best: grooving hard and hot. James Brown would have loved this piece. "Keep Me Warm" is a pure beautiful 'flo-etry' ballad with Klein switching to soprano sax. Dedicated to Nora Jones, who was initially compared to Tokunbo when Nora broke out in 2003, now you'll know why. "Get Away" is for Isaac Hayes and carries a strong beautiful lyrical/poetic social message over a hot beat with dramatic breaks. (This is an abbreviated version.) Five BIG Stars for tok, tok, tok!!!
