Synopsis

Keith Jarrett may be at his best in trio format with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, two stellar musicians who offer more than solid support. Peacock is a constant presence, providing a propulsive beat and stimulating counterlines, while DeJohnette varies his percussive textures, shifting accents, creating polyrhythms, and adding detail. They're all in excellent form for this Tokyo concert, creating an 80-minute program that begins with Jarrett's lyrical, unaccompanied theme statement to "It Could Happen to You," then ranges freely between standards and originals, from the rhapsodic "Summer Night" to the bop blues of Charlie Parker's "Billie's Bounce." The touching "Last Night When We Were Young" segues easily into Jarrett's own dancing "Caribbean Sky," while the extended "I'll Remember April" is a fine essay in developed group interplay. --Stuart Broomer

CD Reviews

Top notch

"I fell in love with Koln a year ago. Then found myself listening to this CD in the store. I lost complete touch with reality -- and ended up listening to the entire CD three times before buying it and returning home to listen three more times. The improvisation is startling, the mood is deeply romantic, blue, and energetic simultaneously, and the precision is astonishing. I immediately got on Amazon and ordered one for every member of my family! Put it along side Koln in your collection -- and alternate -- to get a very different Jarrett, but a very similar resultant emotional reaction."
A fabulous trio at the height of its powers

"I'm sitting here at the computer listening to this wonderful performance by Jarrett's Standards Trio. If you haven't had the good fortune to be exposed to their music, this is a great place to start. "Never Let Me Go" is a gorgeous ballad and "I'll Remember April" is another standout. This is improvisation at its best."
Wonderful!!

"This is the first Keith Jarrett's CD I have listened to, and it is simply great! He seem to posses a complete freedom in utilizing any melodical tools and approaches he chooses. And he does it wonderfully. Although Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette are modestly reffered to as "Trio", they are truly remarkable musicians in their own right. Their solos are a delight to listen to. Outstanding music!"
