Synopsis

Product Description
Autumn Records is pleased to announce the release of Chasing The Wind, the new instrumental project from GRAMMY and Dove Award-winning guitarist, producer and songwriter Tom Hemby. An A-List session player, insightful and sensitive songwriter and seasoned stage performer, Hemby has lent his skills to hundreds of recordings and live shows with such luminaries as Michael McDonald, Chaka Kahn, BeBe Winans, James Ingram, Edwin McCain, Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Nikka Costa, Keb Mo, Amy Grant, Vince Gill, The Judds, Jo Dee Messina, Barry Manilow, Trisha Yearwood, Jaci Velasquez, Martina McBride, Montgomery Gentry, George Strait, Kenny Rogers, Steven Curtis Chapman, Garth Brooks, Steve Winwood and dozens of others. An amazing amalgam of jazz-flavored R&B layered over elements of Americana and shot with tribal beats and world music influences, Chasing the Wind is as subtle, complex, eclectic, familiar and mysterious as the man who created the music. Without the veneer of lyrics to get between the artist and the audience, Hemby's deft acoustic guitar pierces straight to the soul, evoking emotions as diverse as quiet contemplation, joy, peace, excitement and, at times, a touch of melancholy. Exploring the full range of human emotion, Hemby allows moments of gentle introspection to waft through his instrument on such songs as "Mingo Rain," where he is joined by his friend, the incomparable Phil Keaggy. But he doesn't neglect those mournful moments in life, as evidenced by the melancholy yet peace-evoking "A Sad Goodbye" and the quietly meandering "Requiem for a Guitar Player." Nor does he deny those joyful seasons of community with the laughter-inducing "Well Id's Awright" or those passionate nights shared by only two on the Latin-inflected "Streets of Rio." "Sometimes words get in the way," Hemby says. "They are finite and come with tremendous preconceived notions. Music doesn't hold those preconceived notions. It reaches us at a different place. That inspiration that comes from and through the music, particularly when it is played with excellence, is God-breathed and can take us to places that bring us into a closer relationship with God." Tom Hemby's Chasing The Wind is available from Autumn Records/Christian Network International. For more information on Tom Hemby and his new album Chasing The Wind, visit www.autumnrecords.com

CD Reviews

Hemby - playing his own compositions vs . . .
S. Johns | western Maryland, USA | 02/04/2010
(3 out of 5 stars)

"If you really like Hemby -- are partial to his own compositions -- then you will like this CD. While Hemby can be as 'food and drink' to me, I personally find a number of the pieces on this CD tiringly monotonous. Where I think Hemby really excels is in his arrangements of the music of other composers, particularly traditional (esp. Christmas) melodies. For example, abundant exquisite chord progressions et al are part and parcel of his "ACOUSTIC CHRISTMAS" CD. These are familiar tunes taken, for me, to the height of musical expression. On another CD, "CHRISTMAS TREASURES" (various artists) I have listened -- perhaps 100 times -- to Hemby perform "I'll be Home for Christmas." I never tire of it and am amazed and inspired by his arrangement of that piece."
