CD Reviews

Great To Hear It Again

"THIS WAS SUCH AN INFLUENTIAL RECORDING WHEN IT WAS INITIALLY RELEASED. TODAY, WHILE SOME OF THE CONTENT MAY BE A BIT DATED, STILL SOUNDS GREAT AND HOLDS UP WELL. THE DIGITAL RECORDING IS EXCELLENT AND MUSICALLY CAN, AND WILL BE ENJOYED FOR DECADES TO COME. WELL WORTH THE PRICE AND A MUST FOR ALL WHO ENJOY THIS MUSICAL FORMAT!"
I agree, this is the best recording of his work ever release

"I agree with the two reviews above, this is the best of his recordings. Mine is a two record vinyl copy which I burned to a CD and file program with the cakewalk technology. What makes the record so good is that for once, Paxton keeps the humorous songs and topicality to a minimum and brings tremendous feeling to Outward Bound and especially Ramblin' Boy (the only time I heard him surpass this recording was when he sang it in tribute to his dead friend Phil Ochs at the memorial concert in NY at the Felt Forum.) If you are buying, the other essential is Even on a Gray Day which contains wonderful versions of ballads When Annie Took Me Home; Annie's Going to Sing Her Song; and Hold on to Me, Babe. I often heard Paxton during this period either in his then hometown of East Hampton, Long Island or in one of the Village Clubs in Manhattan. At this time (the early eighties) he seemed to possess a romantic melancholy which brought out great new textures and feelings in his old material. I was surprised to see that it came out of Flyin Fish records in Chicago. In short, get your hands on these records if you like the moodier, more introspective and personal element in Tom Paxton's music. By the way, I still play the vinyl copy and it is superior to the cd.

Hands down the best Paxton CD

"Converting vinyl to digital is something I avoid whenever I can. I will always look for and buy CD versions of my vinyl rather than convert, sort tracks, fill in song info, etc. I found essentially all of these songs in other versions on other CD's that I bought, but they always came up short, so I converted from vinyl. It is now available on CD (albeit at an insane price). This performance captures Tom Paxton at his absolute best."
