Bear Family can do better

"I was surprised that Bear Family, the outstanding and promising label who usually managed to release a "complete" hits session for artists in that era, was flopped in this one. Bobby Helms; Freddie Bell & the Bell Boys; Robin Luke; Terry Noland and plenty of excellent boxsets ever released by the Bear were just simply tremendous! So basically the drawbacks of this CD is that the equally good B-sides of Tommy Sands singles were excluded as well as a few A-sides! For example: "Hep Dee Hootie"; "My Love Song"; "Fantastically Foolish" and "Crazy ' Cause I Love You" etc are among those mising B-side tracks. And for the A-sides: "Let me be loved"; "After the senior Prom" & "Sinner Man" etc had got no room for them. Okay, why not making this CD a double just like Bobby Helm's one by the Bear Family too? I am sure those die hard Tommy's fans wouldn't mind to pay a few bucks more. This also explains why I give this CD a ratings of four stars and not five.The pros of this CD does manage to bring back most of the great moments by Tommy with the must have "Teenage Crush"; "Goin' Steady"; "Man Like Wow!" and the stylish " The Worryin' Kind" as title track here. Some indiviudual may compare Tommy as the imitator of Elvis, whether this is fair to him or not, his best known film "Sing Boy Sing" title song as well as "Soda Pop Pop" can be heard here. But again, those numbers from the film : "Gonna Walk and Walk"; "Who Baby Who" and "Crazy Crazy" etc were missed out.Overall this is an above average collections for Tommy Sands, along with the informative booklet incl. some rare photos of Tommy and his detailed recording sessions log (seems like the trad. of Bear Family-so impressive), considering the limited choice of Tommy's CDs yet in the market, this is still worthy to buy for the entry of your Rock and Oldies Library."

"I enjoyed the CD very much , but I really would like to locate the very earliest of Tommy Sands . I believe Tommy was a country singer before he went to LA. so am looking for any earlier music of his. Also I would dearly like to find the video of his film, Sing, Boy , Sing."

Great Hollywood rock and roll

"Sadly,Tommy Sands is little known today.He was a good looking kid,who,in the 50's,was one of the big Hollywood record label Capitol's answers to Elvis.Tommy hung with Hollywood's teen idol set,was on tv a lot,appeared in several movies-and though his chart impact was not huge,he made a some great music.Tommy's voice was perfect for ballads and acceptable and distinctive for rockers.His biggest hit,the anthemic "Teenage crush",has never been a favorite of mine,but there's plenty more on this collection to justify claims that Tommy should be much higher up in the rock and roll pantheon.On this collection we can hear the cream of the Capitol studio's Hollywood session men backing Tommy on some storming tracks."The worrying kind",featuring some amazing tough guitar work,is simply one of the greatest rock tracks ever."Every little once in a while" is a lively little gem of a song, and even Tommy's driving cover of Chuck Berry's "Maybelline" can give Mr.B a run for his money.

Tommy Sands was a rocker;any rock and roll fan who has dismissed him as merely another contrived Hollywood teen idol should have their minds changed by this fine collection."
