"Tona la Negra SHOULD have been DISCOVERED by the whole world by now---that same world that made Edith Piaf an international icon, and is slowly making a magnificent voice like Cesaria Evora justifiably famous.... Unfortunately, she sings in Spanish, and I can only guess that has been one of the limitations.... I know almost nothing about the life of this woman, but whatever it was like, it was intensely LIVED.......One can never be fooled, and there is no acting here--- only the MOST PROFOUND HONESTY, and the greatest DEPTH and humanity.... This collection centers more on the music of 2 Puerto Rican composers, Rafael Hernandez and Pedro Flores, writers who created the most unforgettable songs which have been sung ENDLESSLY by just about anyone in the LATIN ballad genre---- but it is Tona, believe me, who inflicts an unforgettable feeling and UNIQUE artistry to all of these..... This is all ballads, as oppossed to her more Mexican "Jarocho" side, and she will take you far.....Hey---- as with Piaf, and Evora, you do not need language to feel the palpable EMOTION as it hits you..... Truly an artist of UNIQUE sensibility--- and a collection that presents her at her best........."
