Amazon.com Tony Bennett could probably sing the Homeland Security Act and make it sound like a majestic (and even cool) thing of beauty. His 1968 release, Snowfall: The Tony Bennett Christmas Album, features wonderful takes on Christmas classics, with a syrupy yet playful orchestral backup, courtesy of Robert Fanon. The versions of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" emphasize the romantic elements to great effect, while Bennett's take on "My Favorite Things" is superlative. Where so many artists just re-make the same holiday album every other year, Bennett has opted to append new material to his sole original. And rather than crassly cluttering it up, these new additions help make this classic all the more, um, classic-er. This Legacy re-issue of the crooner's 1968 release includes not only the rousing take on "I'll Be Home for Christmas" from Jon Stewart's TV show, which was added to the 1994 re-issue, but an extra disc with six more tunes in the same vein. --Mike McGonigal Similarly Requested CDs

Traska | Chicago, IL | 01/08/2010 (4 out of 5 stars) "This recording is a re-release by an off-brand label and not to be confused with the very same CD released by Sony in 2004 from a 1968 Columbia recording on vinyl and remastered from the original tapes. As such, it's not surprising that this particular release is a bit off compared to the Sony release. But that said, I have to take issue with the only other reviewer here because doesn't know what he's talking about: as the vinyl LP and the Sony CD will show, Tony does a wonderful job with Christmas songs. Bing, Andy, and Perry all suck at Christmas tunes, on the other hand, because their 'popular' takes on Christmas songs were homogenized, commercialized, and sanitized for the lowest common denominator. Personally, I think their versions are shallow, schmaltzy, mediocre and forgettable and are what made me cringe whenever I heard them -- they sound so plastic, like Muzak. Bennett, in contrast, is a musician's musician and takes as much care with singing Christmas songs as he does with everything else. He can also swing hard and has a wonderful sense of musicality, whereas the other guys don't come close.
I suspect that if Tony Bennett's versions of Christmas songs don't sound 'Christmasy' enough to you, your taste in Christmas music has been badly damaged by way too many saccharine TV Christmas specials. I suggest large doses of Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Dianne Reeves, and Mel Torme to straighten out your ear! And I strongly add that you should go for the Sony release of this album (or even the excellent Columbia LP, if you can find it) and leave this off-brand release in the remainders bin where it deserves to stay.
