CD Reviews

Outstanding bluegrass from when Tony Furtado played bluegras
Nobody important | 07/05/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Those who know about Tony Furtado today probably know him as a slide guitar-playing folk rock singer-songwriter type who hangs around the fringes of the jam band community. Before that phase of his life, though, he was a bluegrass banjo phenom. This is his first album, and while there are progressive leanings to it, the album is firmly rooted in bluegrass. If you listened to this album without knowing who it was, you could easily mistake it for a lost Bela Fleck album in the mold of Drive, or The Bluegrass Sessions. Like those albums, this is hard-driving, banjo-led progressive bluegrass that draws on jazz and Celtic music. The guest list consists of bluegrass/newgrass stalwarts like Rob Ickes, Mike Marshall, Scott Nygaard, Todd Phillips, Joe Craven and Darol Anger. If that isn't enough to make you buy it, take it from Tony Trischka: "Just listen and enjoy.""
