CD Reviews

One of the best Tony Joe albums I have heard
William Vermillion | Orlando, FL. USA | 01/25/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The CD tracking here differs from the original vinyl recording I have heard. But if you want to hear some soulful and moving music, I recommend this album, and in particular, the track "Widow Wimberly". This is more of a solo performance of guitar, harmonica and Tony's warm soulful voice. The only percussion seems to be Tony stomping his foot on the floor next to the mic stand, and although it may be distracting to some, it has a heavy organic sound that makes this track unique. The High Sheriff of Calhoun Parrish was redone on his "One Hot July" CD of a few years ago, and the similarities and differences make it worthwhile listening to the original version here."Save your Sugar for Me" has a nice uptempo feel with a full band in tight accompaniment, although the recording has the quality and feel of a late 60s/early 70s recording session. Tony's rendition of "Hard to Handle" is energetic and fun to listen to, but may not be as enjoyable if you have heard the more modern remakes first.Side one is pretty much all originals while Side two is mostly cover tunes. The ability to present originals and covers is well handled here, as most artists dont even attempt to cover many tunes. They will instead stick with as many of their own compositions as possible, with the obvious exception being Wierd Al Yankovic. Tony handles this task easily. If you like Tony Joe White, this album is a must. Although the recording may sound a bit dated in its quality, the overall sound is very good and the content is enjoyable. An introduction to this album by my dad has led to many years of listening enjoyment. (and by coincidence, my dad and Tony Joe White share a birthday.)"
