Synopsis

Amazon.com
In early reggae, a music that was regularly rough-and-tumble in sound, Toots Hibbert managed a raw, Otis Redding-influenced vocal style that topped even his least smooth competitors. Redding wasn't the only American soul artist who had a profound influence on Toots & the Maytals; the aptly titled "Funky Kingston" cops a guitar lick from James Brown and a casually lurching beat from the Meters. Typical of Music Club releases, this features immaculate sound quality and a bargain price that's hard to beat. A generous helping of classics--everything from bedrock tracks like "Pressure Drop," "Monkey Man," "54-46 Was My Number," and "Sweet & Dandy" to one-of-a-kind remakes of "Take Me Home Country Roads" and "Louie Louie"--makes this a must-own for anyone who wants to understand the fusion of R&B into Jamaican culture or who just wants to push a party a little harder. --Rickey Wright

"You know you can here a song and a few times and then start to like it. Well these guys change that the first time I heard them (from an old record I found at St. Vincent De Paul I knew I loved them They seriosly are the best band I have heard in a long time. Thanks Toots you rock!"
An excellent crossover album for non-reggae listeners

"For anyone whose reggae knowledge is limited to only Bob Marley, this album will definitly open your ears to this wonderful, soulful music form. Toots and the Maytalls combine great beats with Otis Redding-esque vocals and bluesy melodies. There's even some guitar solos. Even my friends who dislike reggae request their cover of "Country Roads" and "Louie Louie" at parties. But past these covers is an amazing collection of songs. This is one of the few CD's I can let play in its entirety without wanting to change any songs. I love them all."
