CD Reviews

Great Band, Good Compilation
Eric R. Last | San Bruno, CA United States | 06/27/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"None of Translator's four original LP's has ever come out on CD, but there have been three different best-of CDs issued. For a fan of their music, all of the collections leave out some favorite songs, but until someone decides to issue the full albums, the collections are the best you can do. (Of course you can also burn the vinyl albums onto CD yourself, as I have done, but I suspect most will not go to that much trouble.) "Translation" has 13 tracks, which makes it a poorer choice than the more recent collection "Everywhere That We Were", which has 17. But, it does have 4 songs that are not on "ETWW", including the wonderful, hypnotic "I Hear You Follow", and their great cover of The Jefferson Airplane's "Today". "ETWW", however, has 8 tracks that are not on this one, including such highlights as "Come With Me", "Favorite Drug" (incredible drumming from David Scheff), and their cover of "Cry For A Shadow", an obscure instrumental written by Harrison and Lennon in the very early Beatle days. You might want to consider buying more than one of the compilations, even though you'll get a lot of overlap. Since this Amazon listing does not give the song information, I'll provide it: 1-Everywhere that I'm not, 2-Breathless agony, 3-Un-alone, 4-Everywhere, 5-I hear you follow, 6-Standing in line, 7-Today, 8-Gravity, 9-Necessary spinning, 10-These old days, 11-O Lazarus, 12-No time like now, 13-Sleeping snakes. One final note - check the reviews for "Everywhere That We Were", you'll find a review written by Translator's guitarist/songwriter/singer Robert Darlington."

"Since there's so little of Translator on CD, the 4 songs contained here that aren't on the other compilation (Everywhere That We Were) become more important. Here's the track list with "
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah it is great and I listen to it often, but..

"Just like Everywhere That We Were is, there is the sense that the guy picking the songs has no idea of what truly represented Translator. Yeah there are the songs that got airplay...I just happen to listen to entire albums and just because it hasn't been made a single does not mean that it isn't great. Long live Heartbeats and Triggers."
