CD Reviews

A Forest Rock Experience
10/23/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Tree Surgeons' debut CD is an innovative synthesis of world rhythms, electro-acoustic interplay and solid songwriting. It's folk. It's rock. It's ambient. The band exclusively uses acoustic instruments -- guitars, flutes, hand drums, drums, recorders, mandolin and bass -- sometimes modified with technological tricks, to produce a haunting, joyous and hypnotic sound. Their rhythms are afro-cuban ("Sleepwalking"), rock ("Morning"), Bolivian ("Ghosts"), South African ("Mozambique"), folk ("Eye of Time"), bluegrass ("Velvet Petals"), zydeco ("12 Speed") and more. The whole thing is held together by their arresting acoustic sound and the brilliant interplay among the musicians: singer/songwriters Mark Trail Sylvester (guitar, voice, bass, flutes)and Glen Woodman (recorders, guitar, voice mandolin, bass) joined by Gary Rosewood on drums and Rob White and Gene Jones on hand drums & percussion."
Organic Music that Keeps Growing on You
David W. Richardson | Baltimore, MD USA | 10/21/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"From the first few minutes, a haunting plaintive strain played on recorder followed by tribal rhythms that emerge from the thicket like something primitive and life-giving, you know you're in for a rare and beautiful ride. The music defies categorization (witness Amazon's "if you like this, try..." suggestions!). Like co-writer Salas' earlier work with "Joes and the Albinos" (one lone LP, now sadly out-of-print), Tree Surgeons' CD is eclectic and rich with surprises that delight on first listening, then yield new growth with each successive one. An artful and authentic debut release."
