CD ReviewsNot for the Clinically Depressed Typo-typer | 04/10/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "If you only listen to Neil Young because it's the only music sad enough to fit your personality, this is not for you. With that said, I think this is a great bluegrass tribute to Neil Young. I picked this up in a CD store a few weeks ago when I was looking for a Neil Young album. I figured, hey I might as well not leave empty-handed, and I've had this CD in my car stereo ever since. I have a enough other CDs from the "Pickin On" series to know that they are not always good. The best one I own is "Pickin On Zeppelin" and I would say that this CD is almost as good. Both Led Zeppelin and Neil Young's music tended to have a good amount of folk influence already, and I think this is what makes these bluegrass tributes so enjoyable. The melodies are generally represented well via bluegrass guitar, fiddle or mandolin, and the songs are very enjoyable--not at all boring noodling. This is not meant to be a copy of the original music. It's an interpretation that captures the feel of each song and represents it through bluegrass instruments. If you enjoy acoustic music (real acoustic music), and Neil Young's music, you can't go wrong with this CD." Neil Young - Upbeat? R. F. Roswell | 01/07/2005 (2 out of 5 stars) "Steve Martin once said that banjo music cannot be anything but happy. That being said, the "Pickin' on Neil Young" collection just doesn't work. If anyone thinks "Needle and the Damage Done" can be anything but a sad commentary, well, that alone should give you an idea as to why this album isn't even a close miss." Same as two other titles with three extra tracks Sammy E. Upton | Washington DC area USA | 04/18/2008 (3 out of 5 stars) "This album is the same as the album titled "Gettin' High On Neil Young" and "Pickin' On Neil Young" though this version has three extra tracks tacked onto the end:
15. Rockin' The Free World 16. Country Girl 17. Harvest Moon It isn't a bad compilation, but sort of Bluegrqss elevator music. Not worth paying for three times though!" |
