Two Slayer Tributes in One.
Gunther Haagendazs | Up High in the Trees | 03/23/2006
(2 out of 5 stars)

"Post Mortem is a 2 disc combo set of the Gateway to Hell Vol. 1 and 2 Slayer Tributes. Most Slayer Tributes are pretty poor and filled with Death Metal and Black Metal interpretations that often leave the listener begging to hear the original. With that in mind, many of the covers here are not memorable nor worth mentioning. If you are a big Slayer fan and death/black metal fan in general get this used and cheap. Its nothing more than an interesting look into bands that they have influenced. The problem: Slayer has influenced way too many bands (mostly death metal). Because they have influenced so many bands, it is no surprise to me that I have not heard of most of the bands here because their influence covers such a wide number of metal bands. Because the total number of songs is 28, I will simply go over the best songs and ignore the average, dull and horrible.

Tribute 1

1. Dead Skin Mask - Dark funeral 9/10: a good Black Metal cover, it works well and doesn't annoy me. Most Black Metal does.

2. Angel of Death - Monstrosity 10/10: this cover is F***ing amazing! However you can also find it on their album In Dark Purity. It's the only Angel of Death cover that does the original just.

4. Necrophiliac - Sadistic Intent 10/10: awesome Death Metal cover. The vocalist is key to this things awesomeness. He sounds like he means it. The musicians aren't bad either.

13. Seasons in the abyss - Somnus 9/10: A Black metal cover that throws keyboards into this song. The Keyboards fit perfectly. The vocalist needs a little work and the song doesn't have the best production but it's still a pretty cool cover.

Tribute 2

2. Kill Again - Angel Corpse 10/10: Whoa! Way faster than the original! Very, very cool. Good Black Metal cover. Vocalist is so-so but the music is amazing.

9. Haunting the Chapel - Equinox 9/10: a good cover of an otherwise forgotten Slayer song.

12. Tormentor - Mystifyer 8/10 normally I wouldn't think this was that great under normal circumstances but the guitar solos are nailed to perfection in this thing.

13. Jesus Saves - Cephalic Carnage ?/10: I'm not sure why I like this cover. I just do.

Well those are the best covers. Everything else is either just either average, unimpressive, forgettable or an abomination. It's a tribute so it could be just my taste in metal (I am very picky). The reason that this is two stars is because I only liked four songs per tribute! That's pathetic considering that there is a total of 28 songs!

Here are other great slayer covers that even top most of the best ones from these tributes. Hoped this helped.

Raining Blood - Malevolent Creation

Piece by Piece - Malevolent Creation

Raining Blood (Live) - Vader

Silent Scream - Vader

Hell Awaits (Live) - Vader

Captor of Sin - At the Gates

Silent Scream - Krisiun

Silent Scream - Children of Bodom

South of Heaven + Mandatory Suicide - Apocalyptica

Raining Blood Medley - Dream Theater

The String Quartet Tribute to Slayer

These two are just weird so I find them entertaining.

Raining Blood - Reggie and the Full Effect...it's funny

Raining Blood - Tori Amos...weird.....
