Synopsis

California-born lead singer Heidi Newfield proves to be Trick Pony's real trick on the debut album from this brash, talented, and road-tested trio. She summons up growling, yelping, howling Janis Joplin-like intensity on tough-but-tender cuts like "On a Night Like This" and "Party of One." She even holds her own with guest vocalists Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash on Trick Pony's cool rockabilly reprise of Cash's "Big River." Newfield's compatriots Keith Burns (guitar and vocals) and Ira Dean (bass and vocals) are decent musicians, but when Newfield fades into the background on second-rate songs like "Just What I Do," "One in a Row," (two of eight songs cowritten by band members), and "Can't Say That on the Radio" the results are far less memorable. On raucous songs like "Pour Me" and "Spent" they indulge in the sort of flashy, aggressive, louder-is-better overkill that typifies far too many young, rowdy retro-rockabilly/honky-tonk bands. On the other hand, when Newfield sinks her emotional teeth into more inspired band compositions like the brassy but vulnerable "Every Other Memory" and the introspective "More Like Me" (which features some great three-part harmony arrangements), Trick Pony back up their youthful verve and abandon with some real heart and soul. --Bob Allen

This trio has talent!

"There's no doubt about it: Trick Pony rocks! Whether it's a male or female singing out the lead vocals, this CD is cram-packed with wonderful tunes. Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings have--you've no doubt read--joined up with the trio on "Big River." While I'll admit that those two are talented, and make a great combination with TP (NOT toilet paper), my personal tastes run toward the more contemporary songs. "Every Other Memory" is a wonderful ballad, and is followed up by a harmony-master piece "More Like Me." "Just What I Do" is my favorite, combining great harmonies with a nice, fast-paced beat. "Stay In This Moment" makes you want to grab your loved one and curl up beside the fire. "On A Night Like This" and "Spent" are also greats. "Can't Say That On The Radio" is a slightly-ironic-humored breakup song. Trick Pony may be new to the stores, but they're a legend in their own way, and they'll be here for quite some time, making us dance and cry (at the same time!)"

"This CD is so GREAT! I recommend it. What I love most is how fun it is and how catchy and well sung the songs are. I love the Outakes...I was rolling. I love every song on the CD and I swear I keep listening to it over and over! If you like good ole honky-tonk country with a whole lot of FUN get this CD!! You wont be disappointed! Thank you!!"
