CD Reviews

The BEST non-Beatles album of the sixties!!
10/20/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is simply the most classic sixties album by a group other than the Beatles. I grew up with this album. Every song on this CD is memorable and hearing them again -- minus the scratches from my worn-out vinyl copy -- is like hearing from a long-lost friend. THIS IS THE BEST TURTLES ALBUM EVER! Fun tunes like "Makin' My Mind Up" and the novelty "The Walking Song" plus movie theme "Guide For the Married Man" are great songs which round out the entire album. The dreamy "I Think I'll Run Away" is my favorite. "Me About You" will stick in your mind for days and leave you with a smile. The CLASSIC Turtles songs "Happy Together" and "She'd Rather Be With Me" are the end pieces which make this THE Turtles album to have in any collection! Rhino for years said they would release this album but never did. Thank you Sundazed for finally getting this masterpiece out. The Greatest Hits CD's didn't do the Turtles justice. This album must be heard in its entirety by any new or old-timer Turtles fan. One other note: Bill Inglot, who mastered many of Rhino's better releases worked on this re-release. For that one reason alone, you can be assured that the sonics of this CD will be impeccable!"
Great songwriting, extraordinary vocal harmonies.

"With the bonus tracks added in, I'd say this is the best Turtles album one can get, short of a greatest hits album. By far my two favorite Turtles songs are "Happy Together" and "She's My Girl," both with extraordinary vocal harmonies and great chord progressions, and they're both on this album. All songs on this CD are decent at worst, great at best. Some other charted songs from this CD are "She'd Rather Be With Me," "You Know What I Mean," and "Me About You." Personally I never cared for the hit "She'd Rather Be With Me," probably since there's nothing that sounds like a chorus, only a wandering bridge that takes up the majority of the song. I remember hearing the pleasant love song "Me About You" for the first time on the radio in early 1969, despite "Happy Together" having been released in 1967. "Makin' My Mind Up" is a fast-paced, good-sounding, positive song in lighthearted '60s style. "Rugs Of Woods And Flowers" is a humorous, sarcastic love song with an affected voice, though I've yet to figure out exactly what is being lampooned. I believe the inspiring "You Know What I Mean" was on one of the Turtles' greatest hits albums."

"After The Turtles song "Happy Together" became a number one hit, their record company released an album with the same title. That's the way they did things back then. Along with the title track, the follow up smash hit "She'd Rather Be With Me" was also included. The rest of the album is basically made up of a random collection of songs from the same time period. The songs vary in quality, but most of them are good. The great "Me About You" is probably the best of these songs. The CD includes three bonus tracks. The hit songs "She's My Girl" and "You Know What I Mean" are great, but "Is It Any Wonder" is nothing special. Fans of '60s pop should enjoy this CD."
