Synopsis

Get one thing straight: Techno is merely the fairy dust sprinkled atop another massive, brilliantly conceived slab of dense, drug-like rock & roll from the only band this side of the Smashing Pumpkins who could pull off such a feat. Mainstream audiences are desperate for something fresh yet familiar, and this Warholian treatise on the plasticity of pop culture expertly mixes new sonic colors with the band's signature art-rock genius. "Discotheque" is an exhilarating opener, "Staring at the Sun" is their answer to relative upstarts Oasis's hit "Wonderwall," and "If God Will Send His Angels" has the makings of a crossover anthem. This is U2 in peak unit-shifting form. --Jeff Bateman

Dont be fooled by the critics
E. Ficarra | 04/14/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I bought Pop and Zooropa to finish my U2 collection. This album was supposedly a terrible album and U2s weak point. I think the opposite. Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and Pop are the strangest albums in U2s catalog (after Original Soundtracks 1). This period in the 90s is amazing. Their experimentation and sound is unbelievable after hearing albums like Rattle and Hum which has a classic rock and blues sound

Some songs like Discotheque and Mofo are very strange and you might not like them the first listen but they grow on you. I also think this album is more emotional than Zooropa and a bit depressing. If god will send his angels is pretty beautiful and please is too. If you wear that velvet dress is a great piece. Staring at the sun is the commercial single in this album and it is very cool although i prefer other songs. Wake up dead man makes this album 3 times better. Its sad lyrics are a great album closer.

Summary: Dont be fooled. Buy this and Zooropa and you will love them unless your one of those classic 80s U2 fans.

I think this is a lot better than the albums they are doing now."
