CD Reviews

An Excellent Collection from Three Albums: Live In Texas `79
Antinomian | Washington, DC | 01/30/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I find the song selection on here curious, not bad, just interesting. I own another "Then and Now" disc, of ELP, and typically is seems they cover relatively recent live performances and live performances from decades past and thus the title: Then and Now.

All the songs are from previously released material. The source of the songs on this disc took quite a while to determine. Not a lot in accumulated time, but took several disc listenings and occasional web searches as my interest waxed and waned. Since the CD booklet doesn't say where the particular songs are from, I'll list them below. Generally, they grouped the songs from the same albums together, except for the last song.

Tracks 8, 9, 10, and 11 are live tracks from the album "Live In Texas `79". This would have Paul Chapman on guitar. Songs from that album have also been on a release called Andy Parker's Birthday.

Tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, and the last track, track 12, are live tracks from "Lights Out in Tokyo - Live '92". This has Archer on guitar. These are not bad songs and represent tracks from a little known point in UFO's career.

Tracks 5, 6, and 7 are, respectively, Doctor Doctor `95, Lights Out `95, and Venus, and are from UFO's 1995 studio CD, "Walk on Water". Michael Schenker had rejoined UFO for the album and plays guitar on these tracks. Note that some websites list Doctor Doctor and Lights Out as live tracks. They are not. They are redone versions of the well known 70's songs. This is why they will sound different when compared to those tunes. Personally, I think this is a good idea. Many 70's songs are dated, and it's nice to get a revamped version of the songs. Venus is a new song. Note that this is a 5 star song, is absolutely superb, and has a superb guitar solo from Schenker. Personally I think the cost of this disc is worth it for this song alone. I don't know what the other tunes on Walk on Water sound like, but many songs from bands past their peak all sound awful. In this case, they put all their creative energies into at least one song, and it worked beautifully."
Excellent compilation with some surprises !

"So you think that you are getting the usual assortment- Wrong.

This interesting CD contains some live versions of songs from the obscure lineup from 1992. This was the lowly regarded High , Stakes, Dangerous Men..album.

Larry Archer (guitar) kicks hard and that lineups new songs sound great.

Running Up The Highway sounds as good as any classic UFO.

Lots of live tracks, but that's good. I like to see what a band has , and the live format is revealing.

Finish this one later.."
