CD ReviewsThe Father of Neo Clasic Heavy Metal Guitar. antonio roman | Coppell, Texas | 06/12/2000 (4 out of 5 stars) "Uli Roth is a Guitar God. Uli, Blackmoore and Schenker invented European Neoclassic Guitar virtuosity. Most 1980's Heavy Metal Guitar players were directly or indirectly influenced by them. Firewind is easier to listen than Earthquaque. It also sounds less like Hendrix. The songs are more staightforward and catchy. Uli's guitar playing is breathtaking as usual. This cd gets 4 stars for ULI'S SINGING. ULI PLEASE FIND YOURSELF A SINGER!" Dissapointment 01/11/2003 (2 out of 5 stars) "This is Uli second LP release, after leaving the Scorpions in 1978. Uli did some amazingly innovative and orginal work with the Scorpions culminating in the 1978 release, Taken by Force. Taken by Force, along with Uli's first solo album, Earthquake, represent Uli's finest work. These songs vary from incredibly lyrical ballads to energetic rockers. Klaus Meiner provided the vocals for Uli's songs on Taken by Force. While Uli's vocals on Earthquake aren't exactly inspiring, they do complement his amazing guitar riffs. The key to Uli's vocal success on Earthquake and on Scorpions albums is that the vocals backup and interweave with the Guitar riffs, which are the centerpiece of all Uli's early work (Sun in My Hand from In Trance is an example). Now to Firewind: here Uli appears to have forgotten that the composition and recording of riff-based guitar is his primary gift. Instead, completely ludicrous vocal tracks dominate on most of the songs. Uli trys to do too much with his very limited vocal abilities, and the result brings almost every song on Firewind near to complete ruin. There is excellent guitar work here (although not as good as Earthquake), but the vocals make the CD nearly unlistenable." This should have been a monster J. Bringle | orlando ,fl | 08/19/2001 (3 out of 5 stars) "i must first say ,i like uli's singing with the scorpions it was a nice contrast to klaus m.....with that said, this album should have been a monster!!!but the reason it wasnt for me was the singing..the music is awesome!!!!the songs are good but the vocals always leave me wishing he had used someone else(like Dio maybe) or at least redid them until they had more punch and less vibrato.this is the first solo uli that i have purchased and granted the copywright says 1994 so im 8 years behind so i am more than willing to listen to more of his stuff to see if it gets better.keep on rockin!"
