Live Congress

"If you like your jazz punky, funky and skronky check out the Universal Congress Of. The majority of tracks on this live album are taken from their `The Sad and Tragic Demise of Big Fine Hot Salty Black Wind' and `The Eleventh Hour Shine On' records. Recorded at a variety of venues in Germany in 1996, the atmosphere is more intimate than on the studio recordings. Close your eyes and you can picture the band on a small stage in front of 50 or so enthusiastic patrons. After a rousing start, `Sparkling Fresh' settles down into a skronking groove until `Freight Train' picks up the pace again. This is followed by an extended workout of `Bermuda Blues'. The mainly instrumental album is punctuated by gritty vocals from Joe Baiza (guitar) and Steve Moss (sax). When congressman Joe Baiza half jokingly christened the band's music `mecolodics', he said `There's as much Meters in it as there is Ornette' (Option No 28). Whatever, Universal Congress Of are (were?) one of a kind. This album contains a bunch of classic Congress tracks providing a fine sample of `mecolodics'."
