"Unwound was a newer, better Rites of Spring, except that - unlike Rites of Spring - they wrote more than two great songs. Hey, those two Rites of Spring songs are fantastic, but Unwound built on that blueprint and made album after album of noisy, complex, heartfelt hardcore, with enough guitar dissonance and experimentation to satisfy the SY fans. No, Sonic Youth doesn't hold a patent on spacy, psychedelic guitar noises or droning post-punk ballads. Unwound gives us that combined with Black Flag venom and a healthy dose of whatever they drink up there in Olympia. It's the water. A brilliant - and overlooked - debut record."

"I first met up with Unwound in a sweaty club in Olympia,Wa. They were shortly out of high school and straight out of Tumwater (just south of Olympia). They were amazing. This was with the original drummer, Brandt Sandeno, and they blew me away. Most of the songs on this cd are from that period of time, early Unwound. This is a great way to learn a little about where they came from, if you know their other, later cds. Or an excellent way to meet Unwound. As I said, they knocked my socks off."
