CD Reviews
Not living up to the reputaion

"I must say I was VERY disappointed with this album. When people disparaged the annual 2003, I told them to get the limited edition--that it was much better (especially the second CD). This year's limited edition does not follow in the well-placed footsteps of its predecessor. Many of the songs on 2004 are on the 2003--sometimes even in the same order. This was a HUGE letdown. What is more, the "bonus" CD of Anthems is (as you can tell from the track listings) NOT a 2004 compilation but a 1999-2003 compilation of many of the big anthems. I had no problem with this except that most of the mixes (which they do NOT list on their site or on Amazon) are NOT the mixes you want...they are the mixes that your friend got on the bad single--not the ones you heard and loved in the clubs (cf. Silence, Don't give it up (which has a fantastic anthem mix by Rauhofer...I don't know why they didn't use it, etc.) Iio is the Riva mix and that's nice to have, but not with the songs that surround it. The other Two CDs are really fluffy. The tracks I was familiar with were great to have, but they were interspersed with really fluffy songs, bad remixes (boys of summer was a huge let down-the ambient remix was bad with the vibe of the rest of the CD). I say, if you're gonna bring back a song from a year or two ago, GREAT, but let it be a new or really great remix. I would recommend getting the 2003...it is less dated and a better continuous mix. If you can get just the 1st and 2nd CDs from that for cheaper that's great--the 3rd was filler."
The Ministry changes tactics for 2004

"The Annual returns for 2004 after a somewhat criticised 2003 edition. You'll be pleased to know that CD1 is yet again full of top quality trance but less full of the "commercial crap" as some may describe it. Yomanda - You're Free, Azure - Sunset, Agnelli & Nelson - Holding Onto Nothing and Space Brothers - One More Chance are perhaps the pick of the tunes but the track that really blew me away was Warrior - X. This tune is beautiful and is sure to evoke a feeling of euphoria in anybody, especially when played loud. Disc 2 offers the best in funky house and easy going club music, with the likes of Milk & Sugar - Let the Sun Shine, Junior Jack - E Samba and Deepest Blue - Deepest Blue all featuring. CD3 features the best house and trance classics with Fatboy Slim, Iio and Paul van Dyk all featuring, and includes some impressive mixing. All in all, The Annual 2004 does not dissapoint, offering a diverse selection of trance and house. It doesn't quite get the 5 stars because some of the mixing on CD 1 lets it down and although it possesses alot of decent trance, the Ministry could have pushed for a few more upcoming monster tunes, rather than including tracks such as Divine Inspiration - The Way and DJ Sammy - Boys of Summer. Nevertheless The Annual 2004 is well worth the buy!"
Good effort.

"I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to Ministry of Sound releases, I only have 10 of their compilations - But this is one of the best of them, especially for someone new. The main reason I buy comps is to have the 'best' songs, so I can discover new artists then buy their own albums/singles. The highlights are Junior Jack's 'Da Hype' (Although it's the dub version with no lyrics - I highly recommend that single in addition - the singer is no other than Robert Smith of The Cure...) 'Cry Little Sister' by the Lost Brothers, 'Lonliness' and 'Wilderness' are also great tracks. 'Deepest Blue' is a highlight of disc 2, and disc 3 is made entirely of material from older annuals - Sort of a cash-in, but if you can get this set cheap enough, it's a cool bonus. However, Even in the limited amount of MOS CDs I have, there's alot of duplicates... But if you're just starting out, this is a great choice. However, if I was able to notice alot of recycled material, I'm sure people that have been buying these compilations for years will be even more annoyed. Other than that, though, this is a good mix - Highly recommended."
MOS - You're becoming complacent

"Very disappointing from MOS - we've known them to be frontrunners in bringing us the sounds we want to hear (and in the past might not have heard much of) Now it's ordinary and nothing new. The oldies CD bears even more witness to this fact. Look elswhere to spend your money. C'mon MOS you and we know you can do better!!Post Note: After reading Adam Smith's review below, I think he must work for the MOS marketing dept or a related association."
