A Label worth remembering

""The Canadian-American Story" is a history of Canadian-American Records, the North Dakota-baed label best remembered for introducing us to Santo & Johnny, Linda Scott and The Choir. The CD's 23 tracks range across C-A's nine-year history (1959-68); besides the acts just named, there are appearances by Jerry Landis (a.k.a. Paul Simon), Joey Brooks (before "You Light Up My Life"), Gerry Granahan, Tony Mitchell, Joey Welz (later C-A's final president), and a generous helping of doo-wop groups, among them the Roomates (this CD finally releases their long-rumored version of "Someone to Watch Over Me") and the Criterions, which included Tim Hauser (later of Manhattan Transfer) and Tommy West (before he linked with Terry Cashman). The booklet, which details C-A's often bizarre history, is very informative, though a little disorganized and rife with misspellings (I think Santo & Johnny's last name is Farina, not Farani). All in all, this is a compact history of a label worth remembering, and one almost wishes for a Volume 2."
