Synopsis

Product Description
This is the second two-CD volume in an eventual four-volume series collecting the complete weekly output of the Hit of the Week franchise, along with rare test and promotional records from the parent Durium Corporation. Hit of the Week records, made with the patented Durium formula on top of a cardboard surface, were the cheapest and best-selling records at the outset of the Great Depression. This second collection picks up where Volume 1 left off, in late 1930, and continues through mid-1931. The selections here were some of the best-loved and most popular issues of Hit of the Week. The songs are still performed today, and the top musicians who made them hits are still well-known artists. The crack musicians include the likes of Ted Fio Rito, Eddie Lang, and Harry Reser. Additionally featured are a couple of ultra-rare test records (a five-minute microgroove test and a "live" recording of stride pianist Leola Felton playing "St. Louis Blues" from the legendary ! Harlem hotspot, Connie's Inn) and all five of the A-series Durium Juniors released ca. 1931, four performed by Frank Luther and Carson Robison under the pseudonyms of Cal and Gid Carson, and one rarity performed by Eva Taylor. These are exclusive Archeophone releases, brought to you once again in collaboration with producer and engineer Doug Benson and Hit of the Week expert Hans Koert.

CD Reviews

Unbelievable!

"Archeophone seems to have accomplished the impossible. First, they found all these weekly recordings from 75 years ago. Then, they got sound out of them beyond what I ever thought was possible! The notes and photos are a great extra bonus as well. I also have a couple of the the 4" Durium Juniors that are included here, and I've never been able to get them to play. What a neat thing to finally get to hear these little suckers! The Eva Taylor recording is fascinating; I've never heard of ANYONE who has a copy.

Bravo, Archeophone!"
Volume two doesn't disappoint!

"I bought volume one of this set, and at the time I thought it couldn't get any better. Somehow, Archeophone has managed to outdo themselves. The sound is astonishing! There is a little more scratch than volume one, but boy oh boy, the music is soooo clear! The inclusion of the little Durium Junior discs is certainly a plus too! They are hard to find, and even harder to play once you find them. Beautiful sound and fabulous notes. Recommend this to anyone!"
Hit of the week fever!

"I was pleased with volume 1 in this series, and decided to spring for volume 2. Very cool-- although these are the most common Hit of the Weeks (and therefore probably of least interest to some collectors) they are presented with amazing fidelity and cleanliness. The best part of the set is the Junior records. I've seen pictures of them before, but never got to actually hear any. They are quite entertaining! Again, Archeophone has presented a masterpiece, and I eagerly await volume 3."
