Synopsis

Product Description
3-D CGI FEATURE DESPICABLE ME, FROM UNIVERSAL PICTURES AND ILLUMINATION ENTERTAINMENT Soundtrack album includes new music by Pharrell, Robin Thicke and others, plus No. 1 classics by The Bee Gees and The Sylvers Film stars Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett,Danny McBride, Jack McBrayer and Julie Andrews Steal the moon? A despicable act...and the obsession of one of the world's greatest super-villains Gru (Steve Carell) in Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's inaugural animated 3-D CGI feature, Despicable Me. DESPICABLE ME: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK, featuring new music by Pharrell, Robin Thicke, Destinee & Paris, and others, plus a pair of classics from The Bee Gees ("You Should Be Dancing") and The Sylvers ("Boogie Fever"). Surrounded by an army of mischievous little minions and armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays and battle-ready vehicles, Gru vanquishes all who stand in his way. That is, until the day he encounters the immense will of three little girls who look at him and see something that no one else has: a potential Dad. In addition to composing the film's orchestral score for the DESPICABLE ME: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK, Pharrell also takes the lead on four tracks he wrote and produced, beginning with the title tune, "Despicable Me," and including "Fun, Fun, Fun," "Prettiest Girls," and "Rocket's Theme." With superstar Robin Thicke, Pharrell co-wrote and produced "My Life", and "I'm on a Roll," by sisters Destinee & Paris (formerly of Interscope's Clique Girlz). Pharrell also wrote and produced tracks for the film's mischievous minions ("Minions Mambo", co-written with Lupe Fiasco), and littlest orphan, Agnes ("The Unicorn Song"). The album is rounded out by two vintage No. 1 disco hits from 1976, by The Bee Gees ("You Should Be Dancing") and The Sylvers ("Boogie Fever").

Come On Rocket, We're Going To The Moon

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Consisting of catchy and upbeat songs, the soundtrack album for this summer's latest animated film "Despicable Me" is a great compilation of music that captures the film's quirky tone. Pharrell contributes the most to the album with stand-out tracks like "Rocket's Theme and Fun, Fun, Fun", both becoming instant favorites of mine after first listen. Another great track is "The Unicorn Song", a goofy, yet perky song filled with an electronic tempo and sung by Agnes, one of the film's orphans. The rest of the soundtrack consists of some fluffy, modern pop songs specifically made for the movie, many of which are enjoyable as well, and a few older R&B tracks.

Overall, I was very surprised how much I enjoyed this album. When it comes to movies targeted towards a younger audience I usually don't find its soundtrack too appealing, especially when it comes to pop music. But, "Despicable Me" is a different story. Instead of using songs that are repetitive and obnoxious, two qualities that are usually found in many children soundtracks, the soundtrack evenly blends together music that is easy on the ears with music that is upbeat to listen to. The final result is an album that is anything but despicable. It's great.

"I knew I wanted the soundtrack the day I saw the movie. I found myself actually listening to the music that was accompanying the entertaining visuals of the movie. There are times where I hear the music in a movie, and even though I general think it sounds good, I wouldn't think to get the soundtrack. This was different.

Songs like "Fun, Fun, Fun", "My Life", and "Prettiest Girls" are really good songs, including vocals from Pharrel and Robin Thicke. One of my favorite songs is Rocket Theme, where the words, "Come on Rocket, we're going to the Moon" is a great song for your kids to wind down to after a busy day.

While listening to this soundtrack, I envision my young kids enjoying an album, maybe on a road trip, that is not full of inappropriate language, but rather full of beautiful melodic rhythms, and old school throwbacks. A "kids" album not sacrificing it's upbeat tempo, with new songs not revamped ones, for cool kids (and adults) of 21st Century."
