Synopsis

Album Description
Highlights of this CD include four pieces available in no other way, shape or form except on this disc. "Bylar" is a previously unrecorded piece by Lisa Gerrard, the singer from Dead Can Dance. Playing the Yang-ch'in (Chinese hammered dulcimer) and backed by her band of percussion, keyboards and voice, she creates an ecstatic plea to the heavens. Bill Nelson, the great British guitarist and founder of Be-Bop Deluxe, played an exquisite e-bow guitar melody over an ambient orchestra for "Themis Aurea." Kevin Keller debuted a multi-layered ambient chamber work, "Beneath the Pendulum." Jeff Pearce shows what one guitarist with a lot of effects can do. He built his previously unreleased composition "A Fragile Light" with every note beginning on his fingertips. The other artists created unique arrangements of previously recorded works. Joaquin Lievano brought the overdubs of "Ecologie" down to a trio of violin, electric bass and guitar. Happy Rhodes created an entirely new arrangement of "Temporary and Eternal" with Kevin Bartlett's morphing guitar loops and effects. Sheila Chandra intoned the incantations of "Sacred Stones" over drones in a one-of-a-kind experience. Ottmar Liebert gives a vigorous performance of "Snakecharmer" and Trance Mission explores the dervish rhythms and didgeridoo ambiences of "Bindi." Seamus Egan brought his entire band for the gorgeous melody of "Mick O'Connor's." R. Carlos Nakai and Peter Kater offer an exquisite collaboration of Native American flute and piano on "Shaman's Call." All performances on this CD were recorded for Echoes, the dailqy program of world fusion and ambient music heard nationwide on Public Radio International.
