Swing Out Sister picks their favourite tunes

"Die-hard SOS fans have known for years how awesome this duo is. Over the years since their first U.S. hit, "Breakout," their sound has evolved into this delicious Fifth Dimension/Burt Bacharach/Dionne Warwick/Sergio Mendes/smooth jazz concoction, yet every tune they crank out still carries their own individual musical stamp.



This collection represents a number of tunes picked out by Andy and Corinne that are, as the title indicates, a few of their favourite things. (Note: The title actually uses the British spelling of "favourite," not the U.S. spelling as listed here on Amazon.) Just to be clear, this is NOT a disc of SOS tunes but rather a disc of songs performed by other artists. In fact, SOS does not appear on this disc at all until the very last track (the hard-to-find Parabolica Mix of "Who's Been Sleeping"). Also note that although track 14 is credited to Akiko, it is actually a duet with Corinne and is co-produced by Andy. (So I guess technically you could say SOS appears on two of the tracks.) In the liner notes, Andy and Corinne talk about each of the songs and why they are so meaningful to them.



Yes, this is a very expensive disc (the price shot up $15 after I ordered my copy...whew!), but it's well worth it. As soon as the disc starts spinning, you can immediately hear how these tracks have inspired SOS's sound over the years. But here's the thing: Even if you're not a big fan of Swing Out Sister, this is still an outstanding collection of great music.
