CD ReviewsPumpin' Disco "Passion" J | Washington, DC United States | 05/10/2000 (4 out of 5 stars) "This one jumps right in to it with Abigail's rousing "Let the Joy Rise" and Bliss Inc's "Faith." Most of the 10 mixes here appear to be made as more palatable (a/k/a less "hard") and, to me, they suffer just a tad because of it. Although, I must say, the mix here of Hannah Jones' "Was That All It Was?" seems musically more sensible than Razor-n-Guido's more popular take. (Still, I'll take Kym Mazelle's original version any day over any of the remakes.) "Wrap You Up" by Mary Kiani is nicely sung, and "Feelin' it Too" by The 3 Jays remains a solid dance track, too. The disc begins to lose it's pace half-way through with ATB's mix of Moby's mostly lame negro-spiritual-wannabe, "Why Does my Heart Feel So Bad?" (Enough of the phony guitarboard joystick already, ATB!) It picks back up with the Euro-bounce sound of "Have a Cigar" by T-Sign and the tribalesque "Umpla the Elephant" by Mr. Quick. At the end, it veers off a bit with a jazz influenced "The Bass Has Got Me Movin'" by [Love] Tatoo, and it ends with something completely different, Touch and Go's "Straight to... Number One," an energetic Latin dance number that will have more than a few folks out of their seats, trilling their tongue, and doing the mambo. I think that if you like lots of postive dance styles thrown together, you'll probably go for this collection."
