The Music City label is normally thought of mostly as a haven for vocal R&B groups, but thanks to an epic archaeological excursion, Ace proudly presents a full complement of vintage good rockin', drawn from the recently unlocked vault of this hallowed Berkeley, California imprint. Music City proprietor Ray Dobard happily entertained any potential hitmaker, and so Going Wild! captures the unique flavour of the Bay Area's response to the 50s rock explosion, showcasing an illuminating line-up of pounding pianos and honking saxes, chanting doo woppers and hiccupping rockabillies. Featuring masters and demos recorded between 1956 and 1960, acts veer from label mainstays like the Gaylarks, 3 Honeydrops and Five Crystels, to East Bay favorites like Jimmy Cicero and Frankie Taro, and cool cats from further afield, such as Redding's E-Marks and Stockton's Mike Smith. Over two-thirds of the compilation's contents are previously unreleased, so even the most astute collector of 50s rock 'n' roll will not be familiar with the vast majority of tracks. Thus, with a jam-packed booklet providing the fascinating low-down on Music City's activities in that magic era, with Going Wild!, they are in for a rockin' treat.
