CD Reviews

Good old Days
12/09/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I like this cd because not only do I get several of my favorite songs on it,but it takes me back to the days when I really liked living in this world of ours.I like listening to it and reliving those days over and over again.I play it for my friends and we talk about where we were, and what we wre doing at that time. It's a lot of fun."
What An Odd Collection

(2 out of 5 stars)

"I'm not sure why someone thought this set needed to exist. First, Rod Stewart seems an unlikely choice for such a reverent tribute - not that his career has been anything short of sensational, it's just that he's not the first artist I think of when I think of someone who is critically influential and important in shaping the direction of pop and rock music, and whose thought process I'd want to better understand. Second, other than the unifying theme of the package, these songs don't necessarily sit well together. They're a strange jumble of R&B tunes throughout the years, but have no consistent musical thread to bind them.Another problem with the collection is that the liner notes provide zero insight from Rod Stewart himself as to *why* he chose to cover these songs. There is a short biographical sketch on Stewart, and small anecdotes about the songs and the original artists who performed them, but shouldn't a package of this sort have a dialogue with Stewart to share with the listener his inspirations? After all, that's the point of the CD, no?The main value of the set is that it may contain a track or two that could fill out a song collection. One excellent nugget is The Persuaders version of "Some Guys Have All The Luck", which is very difficult to find elsewhere. Perhaps others will make similar discoveries."
