CD Reviews

A very sad day in tribute land
BRIAN A. LAFOUNTAIN | Hot Springs, Virginia United States | 01/06/2002

"The graphics on the front of this "collection" are truly what sold me. VERY pleasant and exciting artwork leads the buyer to believe the music is just as exciting. PLEASE NOTE: Listing an entire and interesting array of "bands" to cover these Blondie tunes, the album itself is a shameful and cheezy conglomerate of seemingly two different bands using many different band names to conjure the idea that many "artists" are involved in playing on this "tribute". The same flat out-of-key voice shows up on almost every one of these monotone, worse-than-the-worst-drunken-karaoke-night-I-ever-heard attempts at belting out a Blondie tune tracks. I was so disgusted with the shamefulness of it all: Most lyrics from every song are incorrect several times, the notes are not even the chords used in the original tracks, and finally, you can almost hear the "band" laughing at us as we listen to this sham of a release. The one attempt at artistic integrity is indeed very pleasant: "Look good in Blue" is covered with flair and a beauty revealed as if hearing the song for the first time and deserves to be separated from this album. If Blondie is to be highlighted by a tribute, I am begging the buyers out there to avoid the blatant disregard for the energy, life and feel that Blondie gave us in so many songs that this collection ... on."

"Honestly, I loved this tribute album from the minute I heard it. I love Blondie, and when I found the album, I was thrilled that some bands that I love were on it (Buck, the Beards, the Chubbies, etc...). I guess it really comes down to who is listening to it.I love almost anything put out by Sympathy For the Record Industry, and this is no exception.Even 2 of the members of Blondie approved it. I love the harder edge that songs are given, and the vocalists, while some do their best Deborah Harry impressions, mostly use their own voices...maybe some people would have prefered a tribute album with superstar bands, but as for me...this one was perfect."
Surprisingly great

"I grew up breathing Blondie. There's no band whose music I know any better, and I consider this to be the best, most fun tribute album I know. I absolutely can't stand almost any other I've ever heard, but I've been listening to this one a lot.

Of course, none of them bests Blondie, but The Short Fuses' "Maria" comes close. Tuuli's "Accidents Never Happen" is crunchily bratty, and High School Sweethearts' "Living in the Real World" is its equal...but Debbie tore both those vocals up more herself.

I love it. And I can't believe I'm saying that about a cash-in tribute record."
