Instro Hipsters Box D.L.J.Mann | UK | 12/01/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "First things first, I do not own the box set but I do have all volumes that were originally sold seperately before going out of print. For those of you who enjoy groovy, mod instrumentals, where hammond and fierce percussion were King, and are by nature completists I strongly advise you purchase the box instead of the seperate volumes as Vol 1 alone is twice the asking price price of the box. Most of these 100 plus tracks will be new to everyone but the most dedicated of collectors. There are, admittedly, some tracks that have been comped on CD elsewhere but with the explosion in 60's comps it's a rarity to find one of solely unreleased material, well maybe it is, but they tend to err on the side of quality. Even acknowledging the duplication factor you will have to have a mighty extensive collection.
Like all Past & Present releases, the cover art really does looks as if it was executed by someone's mate who knew his way round paintshop pro. But, unlike the individual releases which were perfunctory in the sleeve note department, the box set apparently contains an 84 page booklet with band histories, pictures and discographies. Makes me wish I had waited. A collector's life.
To detail each volume separately would, I'm afraid, take too much time but anyone who appreciates the styles of Booker T & The MGs, Cop & spy themes like The Avengers & Peter Gunn or the type of groovy themes featured in night club scenes featured in 60's movies or the plainly weird styled grooves favoured by the French, Italians & Germans during the 60's and early 70's this box is a must. Artists featured who might ring a bell include Jimmy Nicol, Dave Pike Set, The John Shakespeare Orchestra, Roland Shaw, The Reg Guest Syndicate, Goldie & The Gingerbreads, Harry Roche, Cyril Stapleton, Ron Grainer & Wynder K frog. The less well knowns include The Purple Fox, Trendsetters LTD, The Voomins, Gabrieli Brass, Spencer Mac and The Brello Cabal.
Btw, this box set does not duplicate any of the tracks found on Psychic Circle's foray into the Instro Hipster series."
