CD Reviews

African Psychedelic Music circa 1970-72
Dave Wilson | Melting Icebergs, Planet Earth | 08/31/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"While this series (Love, Peace & Poetry) paints a superb picture of psychedelic music on the world stage, some of the editions have their weak points. Not because of the compilations but because of the nature of the music at the time. Some governments suppressed young people's music to the point of making it very pop oriented.

Not so with this edition! This edition shows that the young in African culture would absorb influences from everywhere. Hard rock, pop vocals, song structure, psychedelic excursions, jazz and much, much more mixed in with the legacy of their own culture. Great stuff!

This is a great reference to early psychedelic music from the African point of view. Highly recommended. Get the others if you have the money, most notably Love Peace and Poetry: Turkish Psychedelic Music."
Repetitive, but a good addition
Kathryn N. Marvin | Beaverton, OR USA | 10/29/2008
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This is my second purchase from this series, my first being the Asian album. I was impressed by the diversity provided and was interested to see what Africa had to offer.

I was quite highly disappointed. Multiple repeated artists with little variation between their samples and completely untouched mixes. I will freely admit that I probably didn't enjoy this music as much just because I didn't like the music, but the album's repetitive nature is a sad note for the series.

On the topic of music however, the gritty mixes with hints at good polyrhythms are not all bad, and as seen by other reviews, are definitely enjoyable depending on your taste! However, if you're looking for a good introduction, be prepared for a strong bias or a lack of material."
