CD Reviews

Straight up metal, worthy of the METAL MASSACRE Badge

"The Metal Massacre compilation from metal blade has been around since 1982, and gave birth to some of the bigest metal idols of today. Metallica, Malice, Armored Saint, Overkill, Slayer, tyrant, Voivod, Metal Church, Fates Warning Ect...The names go on. It has been a blend of New York thrash and Bay Area in the beginning, now it's metal from across the country/world.

This, the 13th edition, now 11 years past the last Metal Massacre XII, Surpasses the predicessor (by quite a bit I might add) and is a great compilation for a good price to sample bands that you might not buy if you hadn't heard them first. I own all twelve of the originals, and they had slowly drifted to the drain in quality, as metal had done for some years there. This makes a light year leap ahead from where XII left off.

All it takes is 1 or 2 tracks to make this album worth owning. My two tracks are Cellador-Leaving All Behind and 3-Alien Angel. Celldoor is creapishly like Helloween (Kiske/Deris like vocals), very true and clear sound that is true revitalization of old power/european thrash metal. I just moved to Omaha, and did not know that Cellador was from here. Amazing what these kids are doing. 3 has a very similar old school sound, but with a geddy lee rush type edge. Both are keeping metal flame alive.

Now as for the rest of the album, it is jam packed with good metal, guitar work, but a lot of cookie monsters ruining very good riffs. Amon Amarth is very "viking metal", great sound, poor vocals. Bolt thrower also very good music, but the rubbish type vocals. At times some of the new band vocals actually detract from their tallent. Six Feet Under, just doesn't work well for me.

Overall, the whole album is very pallitable to my metal tuned ears, even with the Cookie groups. This will get the fists pumping and a pit rolling. Get this album while it's hot."
Not a false metal band in sight!

"like all Metal Massacres before it, as well as the Metalmeisters, the one Deathmeister, and the two Uncorrupted Steels, Metal Massacre 13 is bent on conquering. if you're expecting trendy stuff like Limp Bizkit, System Of A Down, Tool, Mudvayne, Slipknot, Spineshank, and various other nu-metal bands, you've purchased the wrong album. you will find some metalcore bands on here though. the Black Dahlia Murder does not have to prove that it is king of the metalcore bands. there is even a band on here that has yet to release their album, and I am sure that they will find that Metal Blade is a competent label to work with."
