Synopsis

Assault. Arson. Robbery. Those are the taglines under each of the three mug shots advertising the Mod Squad movie, but they could easily be describing the crime-centric songs driving this hipster vehicle. NYPD poster boy Busta Rhymes--whose weapons-possession charges have landed him more than a few dates in real-life court--leads off with his smug trademark uhh's in "Party Is Goin' On Over Here." The thick rhymes on Everlast's hit single "Ends" dwell on other societal ills: "Some people would rob their mother for the ends." It's easy to draw a thin blue line between the film's troublesome delinquents-turned-undercover-cops and this seamless blend of drawling R&B (Curtis Mayfield, Gerald Levert), skittering club-rat faves (the previously unreleased remix of Bjork's "Alarm Clock"), and, for the rocker kids, some much-welcome fresh material from The Breeders (the serpentine, ABBA-esque "Collage"). Each metropolitan kiss of guns 'n' bass will leave you wanting to fight some of your own crime. --Kristy Ojala

CD Reviews

Music for the listener who likes a little bit of everything
06/16/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Busta Rhymes has a great track, which also featured on his E.LE. album. This song has a crowded party feel to it which is great! Then there is Everlast a great blend of blues, folk, rap, and stitched together with an acoustic guitar sound. Alana Davis has a song that seems like a follow up of her 32 flavors album, good stuff. Next up is the duo with Curtis Mayfield and Lauryn Hill, this track is one of the best mixes between old school veteran and new solo artist.. This track alone is reason enough to buy the album. One track that took me by surprise is the Crash Test Dummies. I have never heard anything by this group other that the hit "Mmmm...." All i have to say is these guys really have grown and artists, the track is just screaming with mature, full sounds. Bjork is always a pleasure. She is an artist with an ear for producing and isn't afraid to bring the full range of her voice over the music she has put so much time into. (check out homogenius)The very last song is a classic, nothing more need be said about it. Overall this CD has good songs and great songs, and if you don't like the good ones so much the great ones are worth the purchase."
Are you looking for that Stabbing Westward song?

"The c.d. could of been much better if they would of added the stabbing westward song which was one the movie preview...if your looking for that song its called "save yourself" by stabbing westward and its on their Darkest Days album."
Well blended 70's and 90's feel

"I sat through the movie (which was okay, not great) and all I could think of was what a perfect soundtrack this would make...and I was right...from the Mayfield number to Bjork and back to the very good Crash Test Dummies song, I have let it become one of those coveted cd's that gets to continuously run uninterrupted...every song brings its own coolness and if you're in a laid back, wanna chill out kind of mood, this is perfect. A special thank-you-god for the excellent Todd Rundgren redo!"
