CD Reviews

So-so, oh no Canada.
Diamond Dave | Chicago, Home of the Blues | 02/10/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Juno that this is the 3rd Cd in a series. I own the 25th, and 30th as well. The music, if you are coming into this on the 35th Cd is top notch for the most part. It is wonderful for Canadians to celebarte canadian music thru a fabulous 4 cd box set. But for those of us that came on board ten years ago, the repetative nature of this set is worrisome and disappointing.

Juno, you can't argue with great songs like "SNOWBIRD" & "FARMER SONG" but these showed up on previous JUNO box sets. Maybe Murray Mclaghlin does not have other Juno-worthy songs to include on this box set, but why repeat something that already appears on the original, 25th showcase? Surely Canada loggest lasting pop export, Anne Murrey, has more popular Juno gems to share with the world beyond the wonderful song of a bird in snow. Even a live version of a classic would be better than putting "SEASON IN THE SUN" on a second Juno package, n'est ce pas? How about honouring someone like Tara Maclean or the brilliant Kathleen Edwards, eh? Pinch Me!

If you could read my mind, you'd know I think it is a good idea to hear '80s rockers, STREETHEART make an appearance. Sure covering the STONES might not be the most original thing to do, but at least they made the grade. How about more CHILLIWACK people? And a different song from LIGHTHOUSE was a nice touch, so Canada, juno you have it in you. To me the most fun is hearing the one hit wonders and lesser knows you forgot or can't find elsewhere, than another cut by RUSH (no disrespect meant to Rush). So bring on VALDY and IAN THOMAS ... and Canada's answer to Vanilla Ice: SNOW (would that make Snow, Northern Ice or Fros-T)?

Juno that about half of the 1st CD is repeated on the other volumes in the series. Too bad they are great songs but not required on this volume.

5 Stars for the music but docked a star for not respected the audience that is buying these very type of Juno box set."
