"Years ago, in a movie theatre in Washington, DC, before the movie they played a recording of a man singing in French with only a spare piano accompaniment--it was some of the most beautiful music I'd ever heard. For years I have searched for music by that artist without success. I've tried different approaches, including buying compilations of French music. I figure if it was so compelling to me, it was probably enjoyed by others and would eventually turn up. This is one collection I bought on my search. It has some of the greatest pre-World War II French singers, including the immortal Edith Piaf (3 songs), influential Charles Trenet, debonair Jean Sablon (France's answer to Bing Crosby), exotic Josephine Baker, charismatic Maurice Chevalier, among others. And while I have not yet found my mystery artist, I have thoroughly enjoyed these high quality recordings."
