Synopsis

Amazon.com
The tunes on Prophecy--hymns to solidarity, ambient sound collage, spirited flute, drum, and Native chant--compose one of the all-time most popular programs broadcast on weekly public radio, Hearts of Space. Featuring some of Native America's most prominent artists, including Joanne Shenandoah, Lawrence Laughing, Coyote Oldman, and William Easton, Prophecy resonates with mellow mindfulness. Verdell Primeaux and Johnny Mike conjoin traditional sounds with samples and "ambient textures," while Soulfood's uplifting "Wayob" widens the net with the inclusion of birdsong and children's voices. "Wisdom," a composition of strange and mystical beauty, leads with gorgeously restrained cello and blends the finest Native American and Tibetan elements (flutes, horns, chants, and prayers) as interpreted by R. Carlos Nakai and Nawang Khechog. --Paige La Grone

The Twirling Smoke of Wisdom

"I am an Indian, not of the Red Kind, but the ones Columbus should have found in 1492. However, living here across the globe I have still have managed to hear a few of the Native American Chants, through CDs of course, and they have awakened this sense of beauty in me, I found them to be quite uplifting.Of course I do not know much about their philosophy, it has not been my pleasure to get accustomed with such a rich heritage and culture as theirs, however their music always fascinated me.I have heard my fair share of music, from New Age to Western Classical, and everything in between. I have heard music from across the globe, you might say I have heard my share of the chords, and well to tell you the truth, this CD has been one of the most enjoyable. This CD is really great, and certain tracks like Carlos Nakai's Wisdom, and Vision by Soulfood were truly amazing. Especially Vision, the track is almost a solo flute track with echoes and a slow chant in the background. The feeling I got from listening to the track cannot be described by words.Truly the compilation is superb, with great tracks, and the best part of the CD is that they are generally not synthesized or given a techno or new age make over, they are mostly untainted instrumental pieces, of excellent composition. I highly recommend this CD, and amongst all the CDs I have found on Native American music this seemed to be the best compilation ever, except for Singing Stones by Michael Stearns which too though much different from this, was a seminal piece of work. These musical pieces still holds the power and magic, and the romanticism of the natives of America. They have acted like portals for me, for me to journey across space, lands, ages, and return to the wilds of America, underneath a starry night, a crackling fire, and words of wisdom rising on the twirling smoke.
A bit of magic, a bit of death, a bit of life, all of it there, amongst the smoke, the spirits and the stars."
