Synopsis

Album Description

Import only collection of bands signed to the Decca/Deram label. Those of you who draw inspiration from that transitional era 1965 to 1971 will no doubt be familiar with the "Circus Days" & the "Rubble" series. This CD focuses much more tightly on the years 67-68. Lyrically, the usual naive early psychedelia subject matter are present and correct:dreams/mind/colours/night/sadness and general surrealness crop up regularly. Musically,'Strawberry Fields' and 'I Am The Walrus' influences are sprayed all over this record like a day-glo rash, but unfortunately most of the time it's carried off with less panache than the Fabs. Included is the The End's Traffic-influenced 'Shades of Orange' (with Charlie Watts guesting on tabla, Stones' completists!!) Similarly the tracks by Curiosity Shoppe, The Attack, The Accent and Human Instinct all start off with a good idea that doesn't quite gel, but again, are very listenable. Universal.

"25 superb examples of British psychedelia (the late 1960s) as originally released for the Decca and Deram U.K. labels. If all you know of "psych" is The Electric Prunes and The Seeds, then stand by to be amazed. While most of these bands remained "nobodies", some were able to transgress the era: Al Stewart turns in a suitably orchestral "Turn Into Earth" (with a far more "americanized" sounding vocal from the noted "Year Of The Cat" singer) while The Moody Blues' "Love & Beauty" (an early, rare track recorded prior to "Nights In White Satin") gives us a glint of what's to come. Other winners include Timebox's "Gone Is The Sad Man" (Mike Patto never got the props he so righteously deserved!), The Accent's "Red Sky At Night", Human Instinct's "A Day In My Mind's Mind" and The Plague's "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow". The remastered sound is excellent (despite some of the more primitive recording sessions) and the liner notes - while way too brief - provide decent information. In short, a total keeper. File proudly next to your "Nuggets" boxed set."

"25 amazing tracks....great sound and liner notes. Of special note: Tintern Abbey's "Vacuum Cleaner", the original 45 is currently changing hands for over 100 pounds, if you can find it. Also of note, "Woodstock" by Turquose (not the same song), "Baby I Need You" by Curiosity Shoppe, "Guess I Was Dreaming" by The Fairytale, and the decidedly NOT psych "Sad And Lonely" by Garden Odyssey Enterprise. I couldn't live without my copy."

"25 different bands,with one track each,drawing from the 1965-71 era.Most of these bands I've never heard of prior to this release.A few that I have include Syn,The Attack(pre-Atomic Rooster),Al Stewart,Moody Blues and Timebox.This is a rather tasty collection.Sort of like a shorter version of the Rhino 4-CD box set 'Nuggets II'.If you're a true fan of '60's psychedelia(like me),you should get many enjoyable plays out of this CD.Recommended."
